Dominicans
For over 800 years, the Order of Preachers, known as the Dominicans, has been forming communities devoted to the pursuit of truth and the preaching of the Gospel.
Founded by St. Dominic in the early 13th century, the Order arose in response to a world hungry for both clarity of thought and holiness of life. St. Dominic gathered companions committed to proclaiming the truth of the Gospel with intellectual rigor and spiritual depth. Dominican friars and sisters throughout the world continue this mission today, especially through education, inviting others into a life shaped by contemplation and the bold proclamation of Veritas incarnate, Jesus Christ.
Dominicans on Campus
Providence College was founded in 1917 by the Dominican friars of the Province of St. Joseph to bring the Dominican charism into the heart of higher education in the United States. Since then, Dominican friars and sisters have remained at the center of the College’s life—teaching, preaching, mentoring, and building community. Providence College remains the only college in the United States founded and administered by the Dominican friars, offering a distinctive academic experience rooted in the Catholic and Dominican tradition.
